Introduction / What will I find in the ASFR Chatroom? / How do I get into the ASFR chatroom?

INTRODUCTION

So you've seen some of the ASFR stuff around the web, you've hit every link on most of the pages, and your search engine results are starting to come up with same old stuff search after search after search.... and you want to know if there is more stuff out there, or would just like to spend some time talking with the people who put the stories and pages together... but how?

Some of the pages and stories offer e-mail addresses, so that's one idea... but e-mail, even on today's modern information superhighway, can still seem like a crawl... especially if you have a question that's been bothering you for a while.

Well, here's another solution. Grab your favorite IRC (Internet-Relay Chat) program, whether it be mIRC, pIRCh, or IRC II, and log into the #asfr room on SandNet! It's easy, it's fun, and it's a growing community that gets bigger by the day!

You might ask yourself, well how do I go about getting into the ASFR chat room, and for that matter, why should I? Let me fill you in on the particulars of daily life in the ASFR chat room, and then tell you how you can join us there!

WHAT WILL I FIND IN THE ASFR CHATROOM?

Okay, so you have your IRC program. Why would you want to join us in the ASFR room? Well, to start out, the ASFR chatroom has some of the most creative-minded individuals on the net, sharing thoughts and ideas with one another. Second, it's one of the best places I've seen on IRC for making new friends. The people there are very newbie-friendly, as well, and won't hesitate to make you feel welcome if you are interested in the many facets of ASFR. And there are many more reasons to join, as well:

• Meet new people who share your interests and views on robots, statues or mannequins
• Share ASFR-related pics and stories with some of the most creative artists and speculative-fiction writers
• Learn about new ASFR-related scenes in movies and TV that you might not have known about, and even discuss trades of items on video
• Find out about new and updated sites on the web where you can find all the best ASFR material
• Role-Play out your fantasies or talk about them with people who don't prejudge
• Join in conversations on all sorts of ASFR-related topics, or talk about non-ASFR-related subjects.
• Throw around your own input on the first Wednesday of the month as we discuss our specially-prepared Topic of the Month
• Find yourself among some of the most fiercely loyal friends in the world!

HOW DO I GET INTO THE ASFR CHATROOM?

• First off, you'll need to make sure you have an IRC-connecting program, such as mIRC, pIRCh, IRCle or IRC-II. The last one is available through some college computers, if you're using a computer on-campus. The others can be found and downloaded online. I have had very few problems with mIRC, and it lists most of the servers you'll want to connect up to, so I suggest it. You can download mIRC at the official mIRC site, http://www.mirc.co.uk

• If you're using mIRC, when you run the program, it will automatically give you the list of servers. By scrolling down, you can find the SandNet servers and connect right up, just like that. Some other IRC client programs may not have the SandNet servers listed. If they don't, simply add these to your list of servers, or connect by typing " /server " followed by a space and the server name, as listed below. In the latter case, type out the port number after the server name as shown:

Example: /server ocala.fl.us.sandnet.org 7000, not /server ocala.fl.us.sandnet.org port 7000

Here is a list of SandNet servers that you can use to connect up to join the ASFR channel. The first two, most people agree, are the most reliable, so I suggest trying those two first. However, if you try and like the other servers, feel free to use those, as well:

• irc.sandnet.org (port 7000)
• ocala.fl.us.sandnet.org (port 7000)
• laredo.tx.us.sandnet.org (port 6667 or 6668)
• atlanta.ga.us.sandnet.org (port 6667)
• stlouis.mo.us.sandnet.org (port 6667 or 7000)

Okay, you've gotten an IRC program and used that program to get onto a SandNet server. What's next? Well, you're almost there. Now, you just need to enter the ASFR room, or channel, as it's called on IRC. Simply type " /join #asfr ", which translates as 'join channel asfr'. And you're in. That simple. Note that on some IRC clients, you can abbreviate even that simple command to save keystrokes: " /j #asfr ". (NOTE: pIRCh users using the command " /j " should note that pIRCh automatically adds the channel symbol, so you should just type " /j asfr ")
