Taral Wayne, writing about himself, says that he is a middle-aged artist who has resided all his life in Toronto, Ontario. Mainly known for his “fannish” art rather than pro, he has been associated with science fiction and fantasy, comics, and furry fandom since 1971. He was nominated eleven times as a fanartist for SF’s highest award, the Hugo. Eleven losses, no wins. In a suprise move though, he was selected to be the Fan Guest of Honour for the 2009 Worldcon in Montreal. He also won the 2008 Rotsler Award, given “for long-time wonder-working with graphic art in amateur publications of the science fiction community”. Nevertheless, he’s worked in book and magazine illustration professionally, and continues to work now and then in comics. (His own book, Beatrix, ran only for three issues before the black & white comic implosion deflated the field. Since then, Taral has had a number of short subjects published in other comics.) While he has done what he prefers to call “niche” art (rather than “fetish” art) for quite a long while, it has only been appearing in public over the last three or four years. A new addition to the WAM art in his Wamserver gallery (and formerly his Downunder Gallery, now offline), Taral recently introduced a new “niche” -- this petrifaction or statuephile page. The artist cautions viewers that the vast majority of the drawings in this gallery are mere sketches or doodles drawn in spare moments for his own amusement, though some have been touched up in Photoshop at a later date for uploading. The gallery doesn’t select from anything Taral thinks of as his “serious” work. For a glimpse at some of that he suggests viewing his gallery pages on Fur Affinity, and now also on DeviantArt, where he keeps a wide assortment of styles and types of art.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
Most of these images were supplied by Taral himself, or posted on his various gallery pages as noted above; the Furry Perils Returns Yahoo! Group; or on Fchan, although Taral is no longer posting new images there; a few others were finds. I’ve arranged them loosely into categories, and added notes on some of them. Except where stated, these notes entirely reflect the opinions of myself (Leem), and not necessarily those of Taral Wayne.
RECYCLE!
In these environmentally-conscious days we are all encouraged to recycle, and of course artists like Taral are no exception. Several of the poses on these pages were recycled from (or to) other pieces of art, and I’ll point out as many as I can find.

PROSE FICTION In addition to art, Taral has also tried his hand at stories. As an alleged writer myself I think the results are pretty good. Female Subjects The Case of the Stoned Client In case you missed the link to it above, this is an illustrated take on the hardboiled detective story, about a private eye who gets a very unusual request from a female client. Peaches and Cream Another one you might have missed above. Hepzibah spends some time as a statue thanks to an enchanted peach. What will she do when the effect wears off? Male Subjects No Bet Jon is getting used to Gretchen’s eccentric requests, but even he thinks it’s a bit much when she asks him to dress up like her old lawn jockey. What’s the method behind her madness? The Changing of the Guard Lew Garland, small-time actor and ladies’ man, is about to play the most realistic role of his life. Indeed, thanks to his host’s amazing powers of mesmerism, Lew is about to learn what becoming the part really means. |
